War Poetry

Messages from wars can run through our emotions easily, weather it's from a picture, an article, or a poetry. Even though it’s from the pass, I can still put myself into others shoes and be part of it with my imagination. I myself have written a poetry that’s inspired from the poetry that I’ve chosen,  Attack by Siegfried Sassoon.

I choose Attack by Siegfried Sassoon was because I really felt the emotion in the beginning ‘’In the wild purple of the glow'ring sun.’’ Was the one that motivated me to choose it. One thing that I’ve noticed was that only the first two and the last four sentences rhymed in a row. The following is either don’t or the one that comes after. But still,  it’s a beautiful poetry to put your emotions in it.

Comparing Attack to my poetry, Hope, is a bit different. I made the first 4 sentences rhyme instead of 2 to make add more emotions into it, so it’s kind of like a paragraph idea. The first 4 I talked about how war has dominated his fear, than the next 3 I talked about how the situation is with his troops, than 1 sentence about his family, than the last 4 is about how he wants to continue his life and not die. On the very last sentence, I had the same idea of using the phrase ‘’Oh god”, or “Oh Jesus” because it kind of represents the whole poetry by showing the tone of the motions through the poetry. Through writing and finding the perfect rhyme for a poetry was not easy in the beginning because I don’t know how is it going to end, but I put myself into others shoes and represent myself as a war soldier, and pretend to think of myself of the feeling of death is approaching on me and the things I won’t be able to do no longer. It was a terrifying thing to think about but it really did helped me a lot to write this poetry.

In conclusion, even though my poetry might not be created as realistic as Siegfried Sassoon’s work because he was a soldier and it’s full of experiences and mine doesn't, but it has feelings into it but not as strong as on a battlefield.

BY SIEGFRIED SASSOON

At dawn the ridge emerges massed and dun

In the wild purple of the glow'ring sun,

Smouldering through spouts of drifting smoke that shroud

The menacing scarred slope; and, one by one,

Tanks creep and topple forward to the wire.

The barrage roars and lifts. Then, clumsily bowed

With bombs and guns and shovels and battle-gear,

Men jostle and climb to, meet the bristling fire.

Lines of grey, muttering faces, masked with fear,

They leave their trenches, going over the top,

While time ticks blank and busy on their wrists,

And hope, with furtive eyes and grappling fists,

Flounders in mud. O Jesus, make it stop!

Hope

By Owen

As soon as the war begun

My heart starts beating like a drum,

As soon as I put my muddy shoes on

I run out and hope I can see my last sun.

One by one our troops have been defeated

Sooner or later our troops will be depleted,

Hopefully  the rest won’t be defeated.

I pray that my family is swell and fine

Oh what can I do to keep myself alive,

There is no time for compliments and wine

Is it really time to say goodbye?

Oh god please, let me survive.
