    PSP 1

At a young age, I was fascinated with the way how Fashion Marketing industry has such a strong influence over society’s choice of styling, and how it can influence current and future trends through different channels.

Fashion is something that never fails to captivate me. It is an ever changing cycle that uses influences from a previous era, modifies them and creates something new. An example is one of my favorite trends; the Androgynous look. This trend has existed since the 1920’s,  yet in the 21st century has men’s tailoring dominating the runway. Since Autumn/Winter, 2010 designers such as Yves Saint Laurent have led the trend with tailored trousers, tuxedo jackets and brogues for women. Spring 2012 is set to see the return of flared jeans and trousers from the 1970’s. Clothing is no longer just a commodity. Fashion has evolved into an expression of personality; it gives a sense of belonging to a group and defines people’s cultures.

My initial interest in Fashion and Marketing began when I was twelve years old and I became a fan of David Bowie. I was not only a huge fan of his music, but I was also a huge fan of his iconic outfits. His outfits have embodied both the male and the female spirit. Each of his outfits has a different message behind it. Sometimes it includes politics, sexism, or even personal feelings. I was truly inspired by his work because his outfits weren’t meant to just look good, but he was also expressing himself at the same time in extreme ways.

In the past year, I have also personally been working on my own designs with my cousin who is a fashion photographer. I have designed shoes, jackets, and shirts. The question I ask myself when I work on a piece is: ‘’How can I put motions onto a piece of cloth, and will express charisma when I wear it?’’ I really like to create bold work. It allows me to push boundaries;  to think outside of the box.  For instance, recently, our school had a Christmas party, and I wore one of my creation: A  black 20cm high shoe without any back support, wrapped in black gum-tape, and 18 nailed poking out of from underneath each shoe, like spikes. The shoes began as a project for art class, which was supposed to represent my hometown, but with all its weirdness, people kept asking me ‘’How?”  Well, the color is black because eighteen years of my life, I have moved from country to country and I don’t know where is the proper ‘’hometown’’ for me, so it’s a deep dark blank space. The eighteen needles represent the numbers of countries I’ve been to is a new fear for me to walk on. It’s heelless because every place that I go to, feels like something is missing, and that’s long-term support from friendships. It’s tall because I have seen a lot of stuff from a high point of view. I am proud of it, maybe not everyone was on the same page with me because it made people looked like dwarfs next to Snow White, but there are no limits in fashion.

I’m confident of choosing the course ‘International Fashion Marketing’  Not only do I want to learn more techniques to make my work better, but also to gain a better understanding of the platform. I am keen to develop an insight into further techniques that take into account a wide range of target audiences. I have carefully considered the elements of time and finance required at this stage and I am willing to commit fully to fulfill my ambition.
